Protecting Secrets of Business
Given the current advances in communication technology and the speed with which information can be copied and modified, keep a secret is a daily challenge. To achieve this, the company should consider taking the following steps :
- Identify all the secrets with value and develop and implement a policy and a program to protect trade secrets
- Inform employees about the importance of trade secrets and policy and program requirements
- Consider carefully and review periodically the list of employees who “need to know or use” information and restrict access to business secrets according to these needs
- Restrict physical and technical access to secrets
- Restrict and monitor access to public buildings that house trade secrets
- Affix marked “secret” or “confidential” on all documents containing business secrets in order to avoid any accidental or inadvertent disclosure
- Sign confidentiality agreements with all affected employees and with third parties who can access the secrets of the business one way or another.
