When new technology gets popular so do the misconceptions about the products using it. When it comes to consumer goods, the new Plasma TV screens addled some of its own to the mix. The word Plasma conjures up visions of some sort of liquid fish tank TV viewer. Inside it is a bubbling cauldron of Plasma. Truth is, the gel like plasma substance is actually contained in microscopic bubbles and millions of the plasma bubbles are tightly compressed between two sheets of glass.

No chance of springing a leak and having to mop up the TV picture. The second misnomer is that Plasma TV’s use much more power than LCD TV screens. In reality the LCD draws a fixed amount of power the entire time it is turned on.

Whereas Plasma draws a varying amount of power, peaking on bright scenes and dropping to low power levels when producing black or dark colours and scenes. When you average them out the total power consumption per hour of Television watched is about the same. The big difference in TV viewing has to due with the old CRT picture tubes that were incredible power hogs compared to both Plasma and LCD.

The real plasma vs LCD comparison boils down to the picture quality which for an overwhelming percentage of the world viewing public, Plasma provides clearer, sharper pictures and better color and brightness than LCD could ever hope for.
